Being a nurse and working with different doctors. I have found there are those with good patient relations and others who just don't know how to relate or talk and teach patients. Anger against anyone is not a way to keep patients. Most dentist recommends that we all should get out teeth cleaned and checked every 6- 8 month to avoid getting detures as we get older. But anger has no place in any health care area. You may want to find another dentist the is covered under your insurance or if you pay out of pocked you can choose any other dentist. Keep smiling!

Yeah, but the dentist was my father. I give the same lecture to my own kids, but NOBODY ELSE!
If the patient says something like, "I just don't understand how this could happen to me," I might say something like, "John, I know that real life gets in the way and time slips away from us all, but it's been over two years now since I have seen you. This might not have happened if you were here a year ago." This advice is offered VERY judiciously, though, and I would say that it is extremely rare that I say something unless the patient sort of opens the door for this kind of comment. I hope that it's never been taken as a "lecture," but I wasn't the one hearing it, so I don't know.

I've gone to the dentist every 6 months since I was three, so I have never had the lecture. My mother was from a poor family that never went to the dentist and she lost her teeth so she was adamant that we practiced good oral hygiene.

If the dentist is getting angry with you for not having regular checkups, then no that is not right. But remember that you are there for his expert opinion and if you just simply don't like the way he is delivering it, you might want to talk to his assistant and tell her your concerns. He might just be having a bad day. I have heard my dentist threaten to call CPS on parents who haven't been getting their kids regular care. This was a little overboard, but he was in a bad mood, though he had a point.

Always. That's what they do. BUT they can only do so much when you neglect your health. A Dentist is not there to hum quietly and go about cleaning your teeth when YOU can't. Listen to him, go every 6 months for a checkup. Money well spent.

No, but that sucks. Because I mean you took the time to come in the first place. And them giving you a talk will not make you want to come again. I had a really terrible orthodontist though. He was always talking personal stuff with his assistant while he was working, making him work so damn slow. And he yelled at me because I had a loose band. C'mon I'm just a kid.

Your dentist probably has financial issues. Unless you have a lot of cavities or alot of plaque buildup/ and or really stained teeth, your dentist should only send your a friendly postcard reminder to come in for a checkup.

Yep.
And I told him that I did not have dental insurance and maybe if he wasn't azz-raping people with outrageous fees in order to make the payment on his new boat that maybe people like me would have been able to visit him more.
He kind of hemmed and hawed and then left the room and I got my teeth cleaned by another dentist in the office who didn't bother to lecture me.

Don't go back. You are paying them. You are their customer. I am in sales and if I treated my customers like that I would find my desk cleaned off in a cardboard box and I'd be on my way to the unemployment office in about ten minutes. There are tons of dentists out there. Screw that, man.
