You've had lots of people hand you a definition. I get a feeling you're asking a deeper question, though.

Back up and figure out what "love" means to you. What do you mean when you say you love someone? Your parents, siblings, romantic partner(s), children - how do you show your love? How far would you go in "loving" someone?

I'm not talking about emotions. Forget emotions. They're fleeting. I only deal with love as a verb. That's reality.

For some people, love means there are no limits to what they'd do for another person. That may sound good, 'til you really start looking closely at it. It's unhealthy for everybody involved.

For others, love means giving things, pleasing, keeping someone happy. Those are the parents who never say no and the children may get married but never put their husbands or wives as high in priority as their parents.

A healthier definition of love, to my way of thinking, is acting so as to support the other person's healthiest choices. You take care of little children in every way. You don't do that for teens, because it cripples them when they should be learning to take care of themselves. I'm sure you can think of other examples.

Now for the unconditional part.

If someone you love gets addicted to something nasty, do you love him enough to get him into detox and treatment? Even if he says he'll hate you forever?

If your daughter came home pregnant because she'd been sneaking out to see someone you'd forbidden her to see, would you love her enough to get past the anger and just deal with the crisis and the fact that she's a scared little girl who isn't old enough to have a baby and now she has to grow up very quickly? Would you love her enough to lay out her choices and insist that she make them? Would you love her enough to refuse to just throw money at the problem so she could have an abortion and then sorta pretend it never happened, or would you insist on dealing with whatever deeper issues led your little girl into sneaking around and screwing around and being stupid in such a big way?

That's unconditional love. Loving people actively, especially when they don't want you to. It's the hard stuff. Sometimes they'll forgive you later, and sometimes they won't. It's still love.

Unconditional love means loving someone no matter what they d or don't do. If he or she is an Axe murderer or a thief it doesn't matter because you love them for who they are and not what they do.
