"American cheese" Gawd, no wonder you Americans have such a terrible reputation for eating such total CRAP! "American cheese" is that actually considered a "food product?" Isn't is just a by-product of plastic and petrochemical wastes?
When I was growing up, even those days in the US, there was ONLY one proper type of cheese for a cheeseburger:
Medium or Aged (Sharp) CHEDDAR CHEESE!
(Uggh... American cheese, now you've gone and made me gag......)

I like provolone actually. It's just a nice light white cheese that doesn't mask the taste of the burger...but just adds a little creaminess to it.

I always go with American. However, I tried this burger the other day it had marinara sauce and melted mozzarella on it. My lord was it good.
