They are rare, but in some places there are courses that help people get over the fear of flying by demonstrating how safe air travel really is today.
You asked how it feels to fly. I am a pilot, & I remember my 1st flying lesson. It was a relatively turbulent day & I recall that for me it was not too unlike riding in a car over a road that sometimes is very smooth, but you hit the occasional hill or rough spot, & it feels very much the same when you are riding in a plane. When the aircraft is climbing, it is like going up a long steep hill in a car. If you fly through turbulace it feels like it would in a car going over a gravel road, or a road with short rolling hills. When the aircraft is decending it feels the same as when a car is going down a long downslope. If you don't experience any fear while riding in a car, then you should find riding in a commercial airliner quite familiar & comfortable.
Here's a few tips. For your 1st time try taking a commuter flight to a close destination, even if it is for no other purpose than to get the experience of riding in a plane. When flying, always pay close attention to the passenger briefing provided by the flight attendants, & find & read the passenger briefing card at your seat. When at your seat locate the nearest emergency exit to where you are seated, & memorize it's location by counting how many seat rows are between you & the exit.
If you are prone to motion sickness in a car, buss, or train, then sit next to a window & look out the window at distant objects as often as you can, & avoid reading or focusing on near objects inside the cabin for long periods.
I am not a nervous passenger myself, but I always find that there is a classical music channel on the plane & I like to close my eyes & listen to that on the headphones given to me by the airline, it's very soothing & relaxing. If you practice YOGA or other form of meditation, try some relaxing meditation before departing, & during the flight.
Remember, fear comes from within. Acknowledge it, accept it, & when it gets unreasonable, & debilitating, don't try to supress it, just tell your fear that you are on top of things, & that you have everything under control, & today you are going ahead. Best of luck & have a safe & enjoyable flight.

Literaly thousands of planes fly everyday. Air travel is safer that drining your car. Go to the airport and watch planes land and take off. People are smiling and laughing and happy. Air travel opens so many doors to the world and makes life much better by being able to go other places, meet other people and become part of the "global" community. Bust through your fears and join the 21st Century. Have a good flight.

Just don't worry about it. Think about how there's less of a chance of getting into an accident on a plane than in a car. Bring a book if you're the type of person that can read on long trips. If you don't want to read, bring music. There's a bit of pressure when you're going up at first, but chewing gum can help with that. Just pretend that you're on a bus. If you're still scared, it could help to cover the windows. =) Good luck!

I understand, I used to hate flying, but I had to do it at first for family reasons and later for work. Now I'm much better with it so know that it's possible to change in this domain.:)

You may want to bring some music with you if you think that might calm you. Granted, at take-off you cannot have any electronic devices on. Nonetheless, you can listen to the music offered on the plane. (Well, assuming the plane is large enough for this service, which would depend on the route.)

You may want to bring some earplugs, planes can be very loud. Also, they can get extremely cold so make sure you have an extra sweater with you.

Once everyone is in their seats, you could try to close your eyes and go to sleep so you miss the whole take-off section. That used to be the part I hated the most. An alternative is to try to talk to the person next to you. I used to hate looking out the window, it made me more anxious, but now I'm fine with it. It used to help me to keep my eyes shut so you may try that.

Just remember that thousands of flights take off daily and it's one of the safest ways of travelling so at least statistically speaking, things should go just fine.

I have traveled so much and being on a plane is NOTHING to worry about. A few things to bring. Dramamine (a lot of people get motion sick on planes i know i do) Music, a good book. make sure you sit on an aisle just in case you get you get nervous and need to move around a bit.

Flying is nothing sacary and you find out its actually pretty boring. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

take a book and read or go to sleep and if all that doesn't help
try asking god to make this easy for you.
so do the first thing and read a really good book
now is the time to get that book you always wanted to start and read on it.
it's the best way to pass time.
good luck
