Has she been tested for heartworms? Advanced heartworm disease causes dogs to cough. I would also get the vet to listen to her chest to see if maybe she has an upper respiratory infection, which can be treated with antibiotics. Another thing it could be is allergies. Try to find a food without any corn or alot of grains in it and see if it helps. Do NOT let your vet talk you into Science Diet. It is a one-star food. Look into Canidae, Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, etc.

It could be any number of things but without knowing what type of dog you have or her age ( as some things are more inherent to older and smaller dogs), it's hard to say. Number one could be just allergies or irritation to the nasal lining and she is merely sneezing. Number two could be kennel cough. If she has been exposed to a dog with bordetella (kennel cough) that could be the culprit but usually doesnt last long in a healthy dog. Number three could be something called Collapsed Trachea and is very common in small dogs. It's a narrowing of the trachea which can cause coughing. Number four is Heartworm disease. The worms invade a dogs heart and grow there and invade the lungs as well. The dog then coughs unproductively trying to dislodge the invader in it's lungs. Please try another vet if your vet isnt giving this the attention you feel it deserves. Good luck!

Since you're concerned because your vet has never heard her, do you have a video camera? Have it somewhere that you can grab it at short notice. The next time she does it, video tape her. Take the tape to your vet and ask him to look at it. It would only take a minute of his/her time. It sounds a little far-fetched, but your description may not match the vet's interpretation of what's going on. This would also put your mind at ease once he/she is able to give an opinion.
Most vets welcome as much information as you can provide. It makes their job easier. If they are not sure or you are not satisfied, by all means, take your dog to another vet for an opinion. As others have said, it could be a myriad of things. You need to be comfortable with the answers your vet gives you.

Git em Gang is right. Reverse sneezing sounds horrible, the first time my dog did it was when he had his bortella vaccine up the nose. That night he started making this snorting noise and It sounded almost like he couldn't get his breath and then he would stop. Did it on and off for a week. The vet said it sounds worse than what it is. Scared me the first time I heard it.

Its a cough. My corgi had kennel cough and it was dreadful. It does look like their choking or about to barf but their coughing. My dog had kennel cough. He had runny eyes, runny noses, and he sneezed. I felt so bad for him. It was hard because he was only 7 weeks old. He got over it in about two months with medication. It took so long because first he started to vomit less frequently, then completely, the his eyes stopped giving out so much discharge, and his cough kept coming back time to time so he wasnt actually over it a couple months later. He's now healthy and happy.

Yes. It's a common condition in little dogs. It has something to do with a malformation in the palate that allows the dog to breath through mouth and nose at the same time. All five of my chihuahuas do it at one time or another (one is more frequent than the others).

To the person above that said their dog eats frogs (ROFL!)
My dog does this occassionally too. Its just coughing. I think sometimes they lick their fur and it gets stuck in their throat. On the other hand, a dog that is always coughing could have kennel cough or heart worm, so just make sure she gets checked out.
