Please do NOT tell me to look on a website. I am after personal recommendations.

Thank you :-)

Try the Kingston Hotel - they do backpackers and small rooms. This part of Canberra is the best for a bit of a party (Kingston/Manuka), with most of the best pubs and restaurants in all of Canberra. This is where truck drivers and so forth stay if they have to stay overnight, so you get some good real human interaction in the pool rooms (despite the Greeks buying the hotel and doing it up with new carpets and fancy wallpaper).

Otherwise, I highly recommend Olims - it's in a great location - a short walk to the Australian War Memorial, and a longer walk down to the lake, then to Floriade.
It is walking distance to the centre of town, but has easy parking and they have so many rooms, it isn't anywhere near as expensive as the central hotels and is in a very pleasant location.

The 2 hotels that come to mind are the crowne plaza and the Hyatt they are both within walking distance to Floriade. As for an inexpensive hotel in Canberra, I don't think such a place exists! We do have a formula1 hotel on the outskirts, it will be a 15min drive to Floriade.

i used to work in the diplomat hotel in manuka - it's about a 40 minute walk to floriade, but its around the lake and absolutely beautiful - but no matter where you book, book early!!! you may already be too late!

good luck!
