I take note all the time. It's so I can remember specific points that affect me or speak to me. Also so I can go back and look over which scriptures were used.

It could be for a variety of reasons. They may be writing down the passages that the preacher is using for later review. They may want to write down the various points that the preacher covers in his sermon so that they can remember them better and pray over them to see if their lives are lining up with the insights the preacher is sharing from the Word of God. They might have a study group during the week where they discuss the sermon or they might want to tell other people what they heard without missing anything because they forgot about a part of the message.

For the same reason students take notes in class - to remember the sermon better and to reflect on what the preacher has said when they go home; also some who listen also preach so they may use different pointers that they hear in other sermons in sermons of their own.

You want to understand a room full of humans by the actions they take?
Well, first thing that hit me is that some are moved to REMEMBER something said. It sparked something inside them, as important.
Why are people asleep? Why do people freak over babies? Why are some worried about if the daily distractions of life when they should be focusing on GOD?
Just focus more on the sermon.
There is no telling how people will use or misuse their free will during their life.

The only reason I take notes is for something I will definitely use later. Sermon notes, sorry, I'm not going to be tested on those notes, I'm not attending seminary, no reason at all to write anything down. I listen.

If they are interested in the sermon they may want to take notes so that they can reflect on what was said later. Most things that we hear we do not retain in memory. So if they take notes on what is said and write down verses that were taught on they can read and study on their own later..

It helps to remember things you want to remember when you take notes from a speaker. If you don't have a pen, you can practice writing it in your heart, if God is really making something clear to you. The Holy Spirit will bring it back to mind at important times.

His Word is written in our hearts.

We are supposed to study the bible ourselves and make up our own minds. In church you should take notes and study what is being taught. Hopefully, your pastor is teaching correctly but if you do not come up with the same understanding. You should discuss it with your pastor.

Questions should not offend your pastor, in fact, I have stumped mine once or twice, ha ha. None the less, it is the best way to make sure your not being led astray.

I know a lot of people take notes to help them focus and organize thoughts; it's a lot harder for the mind to wander to what one's going to have for lunch when one is taking notes.

Well...I'm a visual learner, so if I write things down, it's easier for me to learn something and remember it, so that could be one reason. Others may want to look up passages later, or it may be easier for them to follow by writing key points down.
