No, it is normal, probably brought on by a change in her environment (it may be as subtle as less or more light.) Have you had lights on later? Been putting her to bed later?

It sounds like you are doing a great job caring for her, given her age (most pet cockatiels don't make it past 10, but their life span can be around 20 with good care and the right diet.) I wouldn't get her a mate. If anything, it might upset her... a "friend" a.k.a. another female or a parakeet in the house, might be fun for her, but wouldn't have anything to do with her laying eggs.

The suddeness of it might also be a change in her hormones, nutrition or metabolism.... a "well bird" visit to the vet wouldn't hurt.

I had a cockatiel that wouldn't quit laying eggs after her mate died. I got a lot of advice and tried everything. Covering the cage for a few extra hours daily to simulate winter. Moving the cage to another room. Leaving the eggs in the cage. Taking the eggs out. I didn't want to get her a mate because she was already old. And frankly she wasn't pleasant to be around while laying eggs: stinky poop, biting to protect her eggs... One thing that did work was to switch cages every day. Finally I got her a young budgie, in the same cage. She quit laying eggs and they became best friends.

Relax I know what to do

first off your cockatiel; doesnt need a mate

cockatiels lay eggs for the human they perseive as their mate, that being you. Its her way of saying I love you lets have a family.

whatever you do dont take the egg away it will stimulate her to lay more and more and she will deplete her calcium supply and kill herself from it.

let her raise the egg for a week or 2, so her hormonal level goes down

When I worked at a pet store the female cockatiels would lay eggs and we did the same thing and they were fine after we let them raise the eggs for 2 weeks.
