This Desease effects children from 1-12 years old. Their brain and liver swell up after taking baby asprin while having the flu. It happened to me where I was 4-that was 29 yrs ago - no local doctors when I live know anything about it. What are some of the long term effects? If anybody knows anything about Reyne-s Syndrom at all please let me know. Thank you.

There is a web site that you may want to look at. I'm not sure what information your looking for, but it looked pretty informative to me.

Reye's Syndrome is a encephalopathy associated with influenza B epidemics or sporadic cases of influenzae A and varicella. Characteristically, the encephalopathy develops 4-7 days after the onset of a viral illness with vomiting, obnubilation going to coma. Epidemiologic studies have shown statistical association between the ingestion of aspirin-containing compounds and the development of Reye's syndrome.

If you survived Reye's syndrome 29 years ago without demonstrable sequelae, it is unlikely that anything new will develop. Remember, implied, but not stated in the answer above is that many children that develop Reye's syndrome have NOT taken aspirin. So, the absence of aspirin therapy does not preclude the diagnosis.

you pretty well covered it. years ago all there was was children aspirin and it was something that happened as a reaction to being given medication while having the flu that triggered it off. I do not think anything more was discovered about it. It still happens but not as much because people use tylenol. Now we worry about tylenol over dose.
