I want to hook an HDMI DVD player directly into my HD TV for the video feed, but I need to use an audio coaxial cable in my receiver for surround sound (my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs). Will this work or do you have to use HDMI for both audio/video?

You'll be fine, you will just want to turn the audio on the tv all the way down, or you may get an echo effect from a delay in the audio from the tv and the audio from the sound system.

You MAY be fine. Make sure that your DVD player will also output to the separate digital audio connector if you select HDMI output. I expect most will.
