Why do people try to keep them that way? Curse words, pornography, violence, etc... are being censored everywhere. Why? Do people really think that if you censor a movie on TV, that children wont learn of it? Children will go to school and know all there is to know about what was censored. Parents cant stop what kids learn at school, unless they keep them at home.

Kids arent as innocent as some of you seem to believe.

And as for those of you who dont want to see violence and sex and whatnot, you have a choice not to watch it. Just change the channel on the TV or radio or whatever. Dont censor something so that it prevents everyone from watching it. Some of us DO want to watch it.

I think its fine if you prevent your own children from watching certain shows or listening to certain types of music. More power to you.

As for having my cake and eating it too, I dont plan on having children, so it doesnt apply to me. But thanks for your point of view. :)

What is wrong with this picture?? Are there no standards at all in the world anymore? Children are not innocent because they are stupid (stupid people think that) they are innocent because they are ignorant and in this case ignorance is bliss. All we can do is protect our children as long as we possibly can and hope that in that time we have taught them morals and standards so they do make wise decisions when they are old enough.

It's too obvious that so many of us (parents in general) have failed otherwise we wouldn't be discussing this question!

The point isn't about what they learn so much as it is about what society accepts. This is moral relevance. Just like making gay marriage a respectable, equal contract to hetero- supports an ill on society. As individuals, I love gay people, but I stand against their agenda whole heartedly for the good of society in general. For the same reason, I support censoring foul language and sexual content and violent content in movies, music and other media. These things encourage such behavior in society.

Example: Snuff films were made illegal even though the actors did not suffer any harm because where snuff films are viewed, generally, someone winds up getting killed in a similar manner the victims in the movies were.

The movie industry has portrayed promiscuity as fun, harmless experience in the movies from the 60's on. Now we have promiscuity rampant throughout society. In the 70's drugs, the same way. In the 80's the me generation were applauded by the audiences. Now we have a terrible selfishness problem. In the 90's it was the gangsta lifestyle, and now gangsta is fad popular. In the 2000's we are seeing a reduction in crime rates and teen pregnancies, etc., because most of the film industry realized they were loosing sales because parents recognized the terrible influence movies were making with pg rated films. If the parent couldn't pre-view it or get a trusted evaluation of it, the kids didn't get to see it. Lot's more examples. Music is the big issue today because of the gangsta fad.

I think the problem is parents and adults dont want to believe that kids are out there doing the things they are doing. So they block it out and try to act like it doesnt exist.

If the parents took the time to talk to their kids about these things from a young age and keep them informed of why they are dangerous, then the kids would have a better understanding of it before they are forced to figure it out on their own through their peers.

I don't think there is anything wrong with violence, sex, etc on tv, music and movies, but the problem is that some people start to think all of what they see is real, because they are not informed that most if what they see is just for entertainment purposes.

Parents need to step it up and inform their kids instead of acting like these things don't take place, maybe not in their kids life yet but it will be happening around them and if you dont let them know about it, they're gonna learn about it from someone else who doesnt care about their well-being as much as you should.

Well, since it seems this is one of the only reasonable questions on the list today...I'll bite.
First of all, kids, as a whole, are a lot more impressionable, if they see something on TV, or in a book, or in a movie, they're more likely to try it in real life.
Remember when the movie about football players, in college came out, with James Caan, and the players for initiation, laid down on the yellow line, to prove how cool under pressure they were?
Sure enough ,some idiot wanted to do that.
As well, since some parents aren't bright enough to stop their kids from watching cinemax or showtime at night, kids get an eyeful at home, then try to see if it works out in society...and someone ends up hurt...case in point, a 12 year old girl was gangraped by a pack of boys, aged 10-14, when they were trying out something seen on tv one night....when asked, they said, they were seeing what it was like...for kicks.
Kids, wether you admit it or not, aren't known for having a lot of common sense. They live for fun, and spur of the moment things, not worrying about repurcussions for the actions you do. A good example, of why the morals have fallen so far, is why so many girls under 18 are pregnant, is because the boys want to play, but not to pay....and so, after a girl get's sacked....you split.
By blocking out what happens, the effort is hoping it helps parents, who would rather talk to their kids about sex....before they get a call at the police station.
Sure, they may not be innocent....but at the same time...kids could always be worse, too.

You answered part of your own question in your last paragraph. You want to watch something and kids watch you. Children are innocent until taught by someone like you. You dont have to say a word. You want your cake and eat it too and it doesnt work that way. It is also why this world is getting worse. That is why more and more kids are being taught at home: the parents dont want their children being brainwashed with filth in our modern public schools. You think you can do whatever you want and there is no responsiblity that goes with it. Wrong answer.

You will think differently after you grow up and have some children of your own.
You know how to find what you want to watch because you are older, A person wont be able to change the channel if it is every where.
I agree there are some very good shows but that doesn't mean they are fit for children.
There is nothing wrong with innocence for children, they should be allowed a child hood for as long as they can have it. You tell me the age that a child should lose their innocence.

Okay let's start with something you obviously don't know. All children are born innocent and children that have mental handicaps stay innocent.
Yes children can learn a lot of what we try to keep from them at home, but in my home my children do not get to watch shows that I feel are inappropriate for them. This will continue until they are 18.
Children do not lose their innocence until someone harms them in ways children should not be harmed. Good Luck.

I do agree with you, very much. Censorship sucks! Children aren't that innocent, but I guess it's the primal instinct that makes the adults want to protect the young from all kinds of "harm." Including "psychological" as well as physical, mental and sometimes spiritual.

And it's not just children who are shielded, many people choose to say "gosh darn it!" instead of more explicit things. That's their right.

On the issue of censorship, it's been around forever and will always be. It's riddiculous sometimes, but I guess the arguement is "There have to be SOME standards!"

I know . . . and the thing is, the more they don't tell their kids about this stuff the more their children are likely to abuse it in the future. After all, they only know what they hear from their friends, not the downside. I don't know how parents who treat their kids like that ever think their kids can function in the real world without learning that stuff.

Children are perceived to be innocent because they are exactly that, innocent in the ways of the world. They do not, because of lack of life skills, have the ability to manipulate the world in adult terms. Adults profess to prefer to keep them that way because children will ultimately become the leaders of the future; as such, minimal exposure to corruption may ensure (in theory) a more satisfactory and peaceful future for mankind. Also, the desire to keep children innocent may be linked to religious beliefs. In Christian religions, we learn that Jesus wants children to be unharmed as He tell us, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, as you do unto Me." Children, because they are new and innocent to the world, are indeed the least of people.
