In no other sport but golf can it's participants consume large quantities of food and alcohol before and during competition and then, not only complete the course, but succeed in winning first prize. The victory to be followed, of course, by a big, fat celebratory cigar.
On any given day a top golfer expends less energy than a three-toed sloth. Proving, conclusively, that the game of golf is nothing more than a stroll in the park and that those who play it may well be the least fit of all sportsmen.

lol i didn't know 3-toe'd sloths could play golf...

anyways, golfers have to work out in order to swing harder, farther, faster, w/e. It's not what you think. Try golfin urself once. Not only does it take skill, it takes determination, just like any other sport. You need to practice and practice and practice in order to get good at it. A stroll in the park? I don't think so. Like every other sport, it leaves you sweating after you finish, whether its 9 or 18 holes. Get your facts straight. I think people want to celebrate when they win, don't you? Even though I haven't seen anybody pull out a cigar. lol, and if the players drink, they can't see/swing straight. And believe it or not, food is also a factor in golf. If eat a large amount of food, you'll find yourself hitting less accurately. I know. I used to play golf.

Proving, conclusively, that the game of golf is nothing more than any other sport, requireing an open mind, lots of practice, and a light heart.

Life demands fun. That's a fact.

Probably because athletes from all of those sports that you actually deem to be sports play golf too.
Besides, no one can eat like a pig while playing golf, it will throw you off in very important ways. Of course, playing in hot weather requires you to eat certain types of food, and drink lots of fluids. And it isn't easy to take a golf swing without being in decent shape, which requires a certain level of balance, like gymnasts need, or any good athlete in any other sport.
Alcohol isn't imbibed during the course of a round when playing for a prize. Not normally anyway.

I agree that it does not have anywhere near the physical output as the popular sports watched. In addition traditionally your physical fitness need not be that of a "basketball player" or such.

Nevertheless it does share a few other components that is highly important in professional sports and this is the reason the media may stretch it a bit and call them athletes.

Hand-eye coordination and mental focus! If you had played golf at high level you would understand this. Again these are not components the general pubic associates with the athlete, but without them any athlete could not compete at the highest level.

High level professional golfers display these aspects to their peak. It is even understood with high level athletes at other sports. You often see them take up the game and speak highly of professional golfers.

Babe Ruth played baseball on hot dogs and beer. Does that count?

Anyways, there is a difference between the athleticism of pro golfers and that of the leisurely senior who rides in a cart at the local club without putting his cigar down. Pro golfers spend a surprising amount of time practicing on the range, just as much time as athletes of others sports would practice.

Try walking a course carrying your bag when it is 90 degrees out there. I am sure lazy-asses like you won't. You must be one of those people who sit around drinking beer and riding in a cart and acting like an idiot on the course. I wish the golf courses would stop this riding nonsense.
