Biotin, and MSM are good for growing hair in length.
BUT is your hair is falling out alot there may be something else going on. Maybe you should see your doc, and ask for some blood testing. Ill note a resource below, theres a list there.
Good Luck!

And you want to spend the extra time each day looking after long hair. Use a quality shampoo with no chemical additives and a matching natural ingredient conditionner. Don't wash your hair excessively and then stop cutting it. You have to let it grow on it's own which may take time.

As you've found out for hair to grow it must not fall out. As you age certain vitamins may need to be supplemented. The best for hair loss is folic acid. Make sure you get a folic acid supplement and you should see a difference when taken regularly. Folic Acid is inexpensive and can be obtained through your local health food stores or pharmacies.

for healthier hair, take vitamin E capsules and drink plenty of water. if your hair is still long, you might want to cut it shorter- taking the weight off of your hair will help tremendously. wash your hair with VO5 Hot Oil Treatment, if your problem is split ends. if your hair is coming out from the root, however, try Rogaine for Women.
