Ok so.... nothing but a trim will "get rid of" split ends.... sad but true. I am a cosmetologist and trust me I have tried everything!
But the good news is there is something I do to mine and it really helps....

Add any of these natural oils, like avocado, coconut, jojoba or olive oil to your hair. This can be a great conditioning regime to do prior to shampooing the hair.
Place any of the above mentioned oils into the hair and place the hair in a bun for about 20 minutes. Wrap your hair under a plastic cap covered by a warm/hot towel (the warmer the better) for added conditioning. You'll find that your hair will be more revived and manageable.

This works better than any product on the market..... always follow with a good conditioner.
I like bed head, a lot, but my favorite is Biolage, I love their whole line, but I really like the conditioning balm. makes your hair feel and smell great, especially if you use it after the treatment above.

I use Redken products on my clients. Please, do NOT use Pantene...terrible for your hair. You can wax a floor with it if you wanted, lol. If your hair is extremely dry or thick you can use Smooth Down. It's Redken's heaviest shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is sort of "normal" use All Soft or their new product Clear Moisture. Clear Moisture seems to add just enough moisture. Try a deep conditioner. You don't have to pay big bucks for that either. Sitting online answering yahoo questions? Slather your hair up with a condition and try putting a plastic cap on it to help retain any little bit of heat you can get! Go about your business as long as possible and then wash it out. For split ends, depending on the rate of your hair's growth you need to wait NO longer than 6 weeks for a trim. Ang getting only a 1/2 inch is fine! If you can wash your hair every other day, do it. If it's greasy don't, but washing it more than once a day depletes hair of it's moisture and natural oils.

First you must cut off the split ends, then put on a good hot oil treatment or a good conditioner. Get your ends trimmed on a monthly basis. Can not give out any product names...

lots of lotion & cream. i for my area like Avon's Deep Moisturizing lotion or something alongside those traces. yet another trick is to apply infant oil once you get out of the bathe. once you pores and skin remains damp, slather the oil on. it would want to experience humorous, even if it keeps you infant tender. =) yet another product that i like is bathtub & body Works' body scrubs. they seem a touch expensive ($18 a pop) yet you'll experience so delicate & the oil in it particularly moisturizes your pores and skin. Shea butter I listen works particularly properly too. solid success! stay warmth! =)
