It's faster for us to go back to Michigan through Canada from NY, but we only have our drivers license. Are they currently requiring birth certificates/passports?

sngcanary- So are you sure it's a drivers license OR a birth certificate? We've never had them ask for the kids, only the adults license....but after the recent London happenings we heard they've been strict.

I would advise having a passport, though until December 31 only a drivers license or birth certificate is required at the border. If you are flying instead of driving you need a birth certificate, at least in Canada. After the beginning of 2007 you MUST have a passport. This isnt to get into Canada or Mexico, but to get back to the USA. Even before that date I think its wise to have a passport.
