I have just bought a 2 month old shih tzu pup, and I was wondering if it is too early to start the potty training. How do I begin to train? He is just poops and pees on the floor at the moment, it's pretty exhausting work to clean up after him. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I have 2 tzus and my little boy tzu took longer to potty train than the girl did. with the boy we just took him out every 1/2 hr. for the 1st couple days, then just every hour after that for the first few weeks. Take the pup out when he first wakes up, within 5 or 10 min after eating or drinking and when he's been running around playing. When you can't watch him confine him to an area, like the kitchen, that doesn't have carpeting. My boy would have accidents once in a while when we were at work, but was great while we were at home, but by the time he was 6 mo. old he was totally dependable and never went in the house again.

Now, my girl tzu we taught to use a litterbox (because we now live in an apt). We spread newspapers all over her area and as she peed or pooed on the papers we took those away and put them into her litterbox (which was at one end of her area). Before long she got the idea that she was to go on the papers in the box. She was fully trained by the time she was 3 mo. old, but we kept her confined to her little playpen while we were at work and didn't give her full run of the house til she was about 5 mo. old.

Start with crate training. That will make you puppy want to be clean and also note when you shih tzu is about 14 wks he will be able to hold the bladder by around that time. So just kinda easy on him right now and work with him.

Shih Tzus are not the smartest of dogs, sorry to say. But if you catch him in the act and disciplin him for it, it will help a lot. Make a huge deal of it when he goes potty outside. Oh and the little guys should be taken out about every hour to avoid accidents. Making it outside will help his self esteem, so taking him out more often should work too.

We have a 7 year old Shih Tzu and we certainly didn't do it right. We tried confining him to one certain area and the advice we followed didn't work, or we didn't follow it correctly. You have to have patience and while you watch the dog destroy the carpet, you are questioning how cute he really is. If we were to do it again (which we won't), we would use the doggie mats, the one that attract them to pee due to the smell, then slowly move it closer to the door, then take it outside then he is trained.

ok i have a shitt zu too. you just gotta confine him/her to a place filled with newspapers. it's pretty tough but it pays off. i don't know if it will poop on the news paper, but for sure after the training it will pee on it.shitt zus are very smart dogs, i can just ask mine if it has to poop and it just tells me by jumping up and down.
