Molt generally takes about six weeks. It starts at the tail and ends at the head. There are a few things you can do to help the process. First and most important is to feed the bird very well. Canaries can not survive well on just seed even when not molting. Feed him some hard boiled egg with the shell on, dark green leafy vegetables, like kale and brocolli. (no iceberg lettuce! it has no nutrional value and may give him diarhea) Cooked frozen mixed vegies are good. Whole grain bread is healthy in small amounts. A cuttlebone is good to have on hand.

The second thing is to be sure he has the opportunity to bathe. This will help open up the new feathers that are coming in and make him more comfortable. Keep his stress levels low if possible. Keep him out of drafts, which you should do anyway, even if not molting.

Molt is a natural process that all birds go through yearly. Its not a disease, but it does leave them a little more vulnerable.

A full molt takes approx 6 weeks.
There are specific molting foods available at better shops that will help your canary maintain better health while molting. Make sure your bird gets lots of fresh greens daily. If he won't take them at first, keep offering them!
