They are all over the map.
About 65% of police agencies use various Glock models. Including the NYPD, FBI, Phila PD. & DEA. SIG SAUER pistols are relied upon by the most renowned law enforcement agencies on earth, as well as by elite military units such as the U.S..Navy SEALs and the British Special Air Service (SAS). The State Police and Highway Patrol agencies of 18 US states & Secert Service carry SIGARMS pistols. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which includes the US Coast Guard, recently conferred a $27.9 million contract, the largest non-military handgun procurement in US history, upon SIGARMS. Beretta is another larger supplier. The standard military sidearm is the Bertta M9 pistol. The LAPD & PA State police are noteable users of Beretta's as well. Sterling, VA. (August 24, 2004) Heckler & Koch has been awarded a multi-year contract, with a potential value up to $26.2 million by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It is intended to service all organizational elements/agencies under DHS. This contract ranks as the single largest handgun procurement ever by a U.S. law enforcement agency with a maximum quantity of 65,000 pistols.
S&W is still a large suppiler to the police market. For 100 years, there revolvers were the arm of choice of most US police. They had some of the first double action autos for the police market as well.

This is a difficult question as most departments carry different brands and calibers.
the most commonly carried brand I think is Glock, the most commonly carried caliber is a different matter though. 9 mm is very popular but so is the .40 caliber. I know a lot of officers though, including myself who carry .45.
FBI were carrying 10 mm for a while, though I admit that I have not talked to my friend who was an agent in about 4 yrs now. But you can find out what each department carries by sending a request for that information.
Most departments limit the caliber to at loweest .38 or .380 and limits to 9 mm, .40 and .45 there are some officers that carry an occasional .44 and I have even seen one carrying a .41 revolver. higher calibers than that are seldom carried because of the liability involved.

The police in the United States aren't regulated for a certain make, model, finish, caliber, capacity weapon on a National Level. Each group, be it federal, state, county, city, etc, makes their own decisions based on their leadership what the policy will be. Some departments mandate a certain type or caliber, some let the officers carry what they want. You can bet though, no matter what the department, bare minimum will be a 9mm pistol (with .40s, .45, .357 Magnum, and .357 SIG being the predominant alternatives) with a shotgun in the car (12 guage) and possibly a rifle to back it up.

A majority of the Law Enforcement agencies in the US, as well as in Europe, carry a 9mm automatic. Of the US departments, the Glock and the Smith and Wesson are the most common. The Glock is lighter, so is easier to carry/wear in a holster. The S&W has ben around longer, and has a good reputation for reliability. In Europe, the Beretta is more common. The US military carries a Beretta 9mm. The 9mm is the NATO caliber of choice.

Mainly 9mm parabellum handguns, mostly Beretta 92F. Some of the government agencies are going back to .45 acp for better stopping power however.
