I would actually aim lower, and try to find a really nice first gen (1980-1983 or so) Mazda RX-7. That would set you back only about $2-$3k for a good one. That would leave you money to fix it up, and to save in an account for repairs.
Heck, you could buy that and an old beater pick-up (S-10 or Ranger) for that money. Use the truck for commuting and just hauling stuff.
If my ideas sound like crud to you, you may also want to look at the list below:
VW GTi
Dodge Neon ACR
MItsubishi Eclipse (mid 90's model)
Camaro or Mustang (suck gas like mad)
Honda Prelude
Mazda RX-7 (later models, were heavier but still fun)
Good luck!

Whatever you decide, make sure you have perused all the helpful websites that specialize in giving blue-book or fair market value to the given year/model. My personal suggestion would be a Mitsubishi Spider if you want sporty. It has the look and power your looking for, yet doesn't have the panache of the Honda depreciation-hogging reputation. You should be able to find a 3-5 yr old model for your budget. Just don't get impatient and buy the second or third one you find.

Deffin. a Honda !! They are good running cars, good on gas and not only that you can do what some call "PIMP" it out , you know like a Fast & Furious type car ... We got a 96 Accord we have had it forever and still runs great and were in process of doing a few things to improve it in looks and in performance !!! ( And they are cheap to fix !! )

Acura integra 96+ coupe or sedan whichever you prefer.. 98 + is alot better looking In my opinion..
you can get a GSR vtec if you want fast without any mods...or you can do the LS/GS if you want non vtec..but still quick and peppy.
my first car was a 96 coupe..i loved it :)
