Healthy weight loss tips
* Take one pound at a time
Don’t get overwhelmed by how much weight you need to lose. Try to remember that "losing 15 pounds in two weeks" is nothing to celebrate. It is important to realize that the more quickly weight is lost, the more likely the loss is coming from water and muscle, not fat.
Since muscle tissue is critical in keeping our metabolism elevated, losing it actually leads to a decrease in the amount of calories we can each day without gaining weight.
Fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Strive for a weight loss of no more than 3-4 pounds per week. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3500 calories.
* Set Reachable Goals
For instance, if you know you need to get more exercise, begin with a manageable goal of, say, walking 10 minutes a day that you know you can achieve. Then build your self-esteem by achieving the small goals you set yourself.
The same logic applies for losing weight.
* Stay off the scales
Don’t get discouraged when your progress seems to be slow according to your bathroom scales. They do not provide a true measure of what is going on with the body.
If exercise levels are adequate (5-7 days a week), you may be putting on muscle but losing fat, thus losing inches even if you are not losing pounds. It's always a good idea to do several body measurements to have a second objective way to monitor progress.
* Stay focused on being healthy, not thin
# Many people become more successful at long term weight loss when their motive changes from wanting to be thinner to wanting to be healthier. Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body's health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body's weight. The Food Pyramid offers a basic outline of the types and amounts of food you should eat each day to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health.
* Fat Free?
We've known for some time that limiting high fat foods in the diet can be helpful with weight loss. That's because fats pack in 9 calories per gram compared to only 4 calories per gram from proteins or carbohydrates. To many, the message to limit fats implied an endorsement to eat unlimited amounts of fat-free products. Just to clarify, fat-free foods have calories too. In some cases fat-free foods have as many calories as their fat laden counterparts. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you will gain weight. Eating less fat will help you to lose weight. Eating less fat and replacing it with excessive amounts of fat-free products will not.
* Drink plenty of water
Drink eight glasses a day. Water is a natural appetite-suppressant. Nettle tea is a great weight-loss tea as it supports metabolism and has diuretic properties.
* Reward yourself
# Each time you reach a goal, such as losing 5 pounds, reward yourself with a gift or a massage.
* Seek help if you need it
# A big key in long term weight control comes from receiving encouragement and support from others. Find a friend to lose weight with or you can check to see if groups such as Weight Watchers, or eDiets offer programs and resources in your area by clicking the links. You may also wish to check with your local hospital to see if their registered dietician conducts group weight loss programs.
* Watch your portions
With the advent of "supersize" meals and increasingly huge portions at restaurants, our concept of normal serving sizes is a distant memory. Be mindful of the amounts of food you consume at a sitting. When necessary, divide your food in half and ask for a take home bag. It is all too easy to be a "plate cleaner" even when served enormous portions. Learn to pay attention to your hunger level and stop eating when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed.
* Eat your food slowly
Did you ever notice that thin people take an awfully long time to eat their food? Eating slowly is one method that can help take off pounds. That's because from the time you begin eating it takes the brain 20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. Fast eaters often eat beyond their true level of fullness before the 20 minute signal has had a chance to set in. The amount of calories consumed before you begin to feel full can vary significantly depending on how quickly you eat. So slow down, take smaller bites and enjoy your food.

"large amount of weight in less time" does sound like a food strike! Timewise it will be difficult to do without some radical overhaul in your eating habits. It's all usual stuff really: don't eat junk foods (all fast foods, fuzzy drinks), but have lots of fruit and veg, fresh fish (not deep-fried in the oil!) and sea-food, no bread/cookies/cakes, no sweets/chocolates and do drink plenty of water.
However you could try a "food-strike" as well, but in a clever way. There is a detox diet called lemon juice cure (or Master Cleanse officially). It takes 10 days; you will loose some weight and will clean your bowels in addition. I did it in April this year - the stomach was so flat afterwards! It is better to do it together with a friend - otherwise you may feel lonely and won't be able to get through all 10 days.
For the cure you need:
1. Lemon juice drink - up to 12 glasses per day. Per one glass:
juice of a half of a lemon
2 tbs of organic maple syrup, the darkest grade - C, C+
200 ml of water
and a bit of cayenne pepper to taste ;-)
2. Drink 2 litres of spring water per day, and
3. 4-5 cups of herbal teas per day: better include mint tea and camomile tea each day
4. To have a stool you need to either drink a salt water in the morning or have a herbal (Senna) laxative before going to bed (half a tsp per half a glass of water) (I did laxative, it's easier and nicer than to have salted water!)
This is it! After day 10, you cannot eat everything immediately. You will need to gradually build up the ability of your stomach to digest hard/solid foods. First day add orange juice, second day some veg soup, and so on.
You can read everything about it here: http://www.geocities.com/hotsprings/spa/7244/master_cleanse.html
Also there is a forum for this here:

Good luck!

The best way to loose weight is sensible eating and exercise. There is no fast fix/diet. It is recommended that a steady average loss of 2lb a week is best and then you will keep it off.
Try to eat nothing with no more than 3 g. saturated fats is a good guideline. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg.
If you are overweight by a lot you can get diet advice from your GP who will recommend you to a qualified dietician - you may also qualify for reduced membership/attendance at a local gym.

Excercise- DO NOT do anything tedious or you will lose interest FAST. find something you love to do and stick with it. I cannot run on the track by myself because i find it too boring, and eventually i hate it and want to skip it. same goes for running on a treadmill, or doing simple workouts alone (pushups, crunches, lunges). Find something like xc trail running, rock climbing, road biking or mountain biking. Serious roadies (dont have to be a racer) can eat pretty much anything they want, since they burn it all up cycling 100-200 miles a week or even more depending on your program. The trick is to find something you love, that way you want to do it. And when you know that running on the track or doing pushups will help you get better in that activity, you wont mind doing it.
Food- dont do any special diet or what not. You see all the europeans are skinny and we wonder why. it is because they simply dont eat as much as we do. hamburgers, hot dogs were both invented in Germany. the French are pastry gods, and the Italians eat heavy ice cream (gelato). They simply dont eat as much. A steak for them is half your hand, while children here eat 1/4 pounders. True what you eat matters, but not as much as how much you eat. By all means, dont eat junk food or drink soda, and if you must, dont eat all of it. And dont start eating half portions all at once, slowly adjust yourself to it, eating one or two less bites each meal each day, for example. Dont belive any of these hyped up diet fads, they all work, but can you really live like that for the rest of your life? making your body adjust to smaller portions is somethign you can live with, because you will be full and cant eat whole burger anymore. Before this golden age of advertising, we americans were thin too. but since then, mc donalds has taken over, followed by diet programs. do you really think they people who write those books or make those meals want you to be not fat? No, thats why they make a series of books, and sell those foods, because you cant live like that forever. You will get skinny, and then boom, you will slip and become fat again, thinking that this worked before, lets do it again and the cycle contintues.
Simply find an activity you love, and eat less.

Go on an apple fast for a couple of days. It works, it de-toxes (but be mindful of detox headaches and detox loose tummy troubles). Once you are clear of rubbish stay off caffiene, don't mix carbs and proteins...
Breakfast - Fruit smoothie or apples
Lunch - Fish, meat salad (no potatoes)
Supper - Jacket potato with salad, or bread and salad
Late night snack - banana (it encourages sleep)
Don't mix fruit with other foods - it makes digestion harder.
You'll get there!! Good luck!

Cut out the carbs, eat lots of fruit and veg. Fill 2 thirds of your plate up with these then eat small portions of meat like chicken. Snack on healthy food and don't eat anything after 5pm
