Microsoft utilities are hopelessly obsolete. The hard drive search features are a joke.

That's what happens when you're a monopoly - you get lazy.

I'm not familiar with power defragmenter (which may mean that it isn't good software, or maybe not). Why don't you take your fragmented disk, run power defragmenter, and then run Windows defrag again to analyze your disk. My guess is that it will tell you that power defragmenter didn't do much.

Update: I downloaded power defragmenter and the other program, contig.exe, that it requires. I now think that it does a good job. But it is taking a VERY long time to defragment my disk, just like Microsoft's tool does. And the command prompt interface isn't very nice. But it is good to know there is an alternative to Microsoft that is free. If it ever finishes running, then I'll be able to tell if it is really any faster. Thanks for the pointer to this software.

Update again: It took Power Defragmenter over an hour to "defragment" my disk, and it really didn't do it. It defragmented each file individually, for the most part, but did not compact the files on disk at all. Also, it has a terrible interface. There is no safe way to pause or stop it without interrupting it in the middle of defragmenting a file, possibly corrupting your disk. Since you cannot guarantee that you won't lose power or something in the middle of an operation, I will not use it again. Microsoft's tool may be slower, but at least it works properly and can be paused or halted.

If you want more pay more... Sorry to say this but this is how Microsoft does the job! Just take a look at the default programs that come with windows and you'll see what I mean...
Disk defragmenter isn't made entirely by Microsoft... Main part of the code was written by Symantec (and optimised by Intel)... If you want to take advantage of the full power it has to offer you need to buy the software.. (same as office, picture management and so on)...
Sad but true..

If you defrag your computer at least once a week, it should not take very long to do so, maybe up to 10 minutes. Be careful downloading and using other defrag programs, they are usually full of spy ware that will slow down your computer. If windows still needs to defrag after using these products then apparently, they are not working. I would stick to the operating system defrag tool if I were you.

Your kidding, right? Think about it.
"Defragmenter"
"POWER defragmenter"
Get it?
If you defragment your disk on a regular basis (maybe once a week) then it should take a matter of minutes instead of hours.
