I have a Maine Coon, he just turned 3. I have 2 problems, the first is, he eats & doesnt gain weight. He has weighed 13lbs for the last year & a half. He should weigh at least 25lbs. The second problem is that he used to be such a jumper when he was young, i mean he could jump on to the tp of the fridge, then one day about 2 years ago he just stopped jumping! now even to jump onto the sofa, its more like he is pulling himself more than pushing. It was after he got nueterd? i dont know if maybe that has something to do with it. And now if you just touch his back legs, he seems to be in slight pain & try to pull away from you. Any suggestions or think you may know why this is. THANKS!

Three years of age is too early I think for any form of severe arthritis which would limit his desire to jump. From your post I feel you kitty has other health issues that need to be addressed.

A veterinarian examination and evaluation is definitely in order.

If it started after he was neurtered I don't care what anyone says, something wasn't done right. He could have a stitch that didn't dissolve or something. Its never too early to suspect arthritis, if humans can get it in chidhood so can cats.....try some glucosamine chondroiton in his food and see if it improves in the next few weeks. I had a very small main coon, she was tiny....her kitten who is how 10 is at least twice the size she was. She was only about 10 lbs with all her fluff, maybe he was just the runt like mine was!

Your cat may have Hyperthyroid Disease. This is a disease where your cat can eat and eat but never gain any weight. Luckily it can be treated. The site bellow goes into detail about treatment.

i would have that checked out especially if he seems to have pain in his back legs this could be the sign of a more serious condition....call the vet and make an appointment...good luck!

take him to the vet if he is slightly in pain. I seriously doubt that his problems was because he was neutered. that isn't normal for a 3 year old cat. he's way too young to have arthritis. PLEASE take him to the vet ASAP!!
