You need something that shows your citizenship. Most drivers licenses don't show citizenship, and in these days of enhanced scrutiny, are not usually accepted. A birth certificate or a passport does. If you are American or Canadian, that's all you need. If you are from somewhere other than the US or Canada, you need a passport.
I don't think that these days, it's a great idea to try and travel anywhere without a passport. It just cuts down on the hassles.

A passport is perfect. However, you don't say what country you are from??
If you are an U.S. citizen, I don't believe that a passport is required until the end of this year. Until then, a Driver's Lisence, and birth certificates if you have minors with you.
Also, it is MUCH easier to get into Canada than it is into the U.S. The U.S. Customs Officials will give you a much harder time, believe me.

You probably just need proof of ID like driver's license and SS card. Pretty soon, you're going to need a passport for travel in Canada and even in Mexico.

Passport and/or birth certificate (state, not county or hospital). Driver's licence is not considered proof of citizenship.
