Magic pen through piece of paper trick?

I saw this performed at a magic shop the other day, when they were trying to promote the pen. The cashier pushed a pen through a 20 dollar bill, ripped it, and gave me back the bill without any rips. How do these pens work? Thanks.

Trick Effect & Routine:

EFFECT: Draw a circle in the middle of a paper napkin.
A card is selected by a spectator and placed face down on the table, sight
unseen.
The napkin is wrapped around the point of the pen and given to the spectator to
hold.

The spectator waves the wrapped pen over the card for a moment.
Upon opening the napkin it is seen that the spirits have been at work and the
name of the card has mysteriously been written inside the circle!

METHOD: Here is another HOT trick being sold on the market today. Give the big powerful Magic Shop your hard earned twenty bucks so they can give you some piece of crap gimmick when you and I can perform this trick - right now with simple sleight of hand. What do you need? A regular deck of cards or your favorite forcing deck (Svengali - whatever) and a pen and a piece of paper maybe 3" x 3".

The cool thing is - if you hype the whole "spirit thing up" the clarity of the spirit writing can afford to be muffled and hazy.

Draw a nice clean circle in the center of the paper and show the spectator and fold it half - so that it sits on the table with one half elevated up - creating a "blind" for you. Point with the pen and instruct the spectator to pick up the card box and remove the cards. Quickly bring the pen back to the paper.

As soon as their eyes go to perform this task - scrawl your force card in the center of the circle - don't do it slow - don't even think about it. Place the pen down quietly and have them hand you the deck.

False shuffle and force your card. Have the card placed face down on the table.

Pick up the pen and paper and wrap the tip in the center of the circle. Play the trick out like described above.
