In professional hair coloring . 10 volume peroxide is used to deposit color. 20 volume is to deposit and lift (lighten) color.
30 volume is for more lightening of the color and 40 volume is for high lift of color. Some colors such as reds, or blondes, will change significantly depending on which peroxide you use.
So, the lower the volume, the more color is deposited . This is especially useful in coloring gray or resistant hair.

the amount of lift .If someones hair is stubborn and there trying to lift past the orange stage to go lighter.they would require more lift30 or 40 .20 volume is used allot when your depositing a color or your a light Blondie and you lift easy.10 vol is used when your just depositing color without really lifting

the amount of chemicals in it, how strong it is, for tinting the eye brows you only use 10 because anything more will make the hair fall out due to the chemicls being to strong
