You see the movie "the ten commandments" Pharoah calls them Hebrews. The Hebrews were part of the 12 tribes{I guess}but most of the 12 tribes were not Hebrews[?]When the ten tribes of the northern confederacy were exiled, did not the hebrews stay in Judah? If this be the case, the Hebrews are Israelites but not all israelites are Hebrews. The history books I always read call all Israelites "Hebrews".What's the deal.?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought that the term Hebrew was another name for Jewish. I know that the word Jew is another word for someone from the tribe a Judah. When the kings started to rule over God's chosen people, the tribes split with one king ruling Judah, Benjamin, and a few other members of other tribes (but not whole tribes) including Mannassah and another king (headed by the tribe of Ephraim) ruling the other tribes. Judah's king adopted the term King of Judah, and the other king adopted the term King of Israel. Because the tribes aligned with the King of Judah are still part of the family of Israel, all Jews/Hebrews are Israelites, but not all Israelites are Jews.
However, things are different if you are talking about someone from the country of modern day Israel. In that case they are most likely of Jewish decent and are also Israelites because of their country of orgin.

Hebrews is likely referring to Semitic peoples. Semitic peoples could have been Israelites, Arabs, anybody of Semitic origin. Use the analogy that all Fords are automobiles, but not all automobiles are Fords. All Israelites are Hebrews, but not all Hebrews are Israelites. 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel were exiled into Babylon under Nebuchadnezzer the Second. The only two to remain in the Promised Land were the tribes of Benjamin and the tribe of Judah, the Benjaminites merging with the tribe of Judah. Hope that makes sense.

The deal is, its a movie, and the writers were not study students of the bible.

Israelites were named such with the renaming by God of Jacob. All other descendants of jacob from this point would be called Israelites. Not all today call themselves this. Mostly they use the name Jew or Jewish.

The twelve tribes of Israel came from the line of Jacob, but only one son would carry on the line of Salvation, which was Judah. Judah's lineage is carried down , but the lineage of the rest of the sons was not, only because the bible deals mostly with the line of Salvation.

Now a days, we do mix up words that were used in biblical times with words that are used today. Hebrew was and is a language and that continues in the same context today as then.

When it comes to movies, the only one I have seen that stays true to the bible itself is The passion of Christ. All the others seem to take poetic license and interpret to their needs for the effect of the movie.

The twelve tribes of Israel started from 12 brothers. Real brothers that the tribes got their names from. All the same people all the same bloodline.

It started with the covenant between God and Abraham. Abraham had a son Issac and Issac begat Jacob. Jacob's name would later be changed to Israel and he had 12 sons that were the patriarchs of the 12 tribes.

All Israelites are Hebrews.
Where are you reading differently?
If they were no Hebrews they wouldn't have come out of Egypt.
There were just over 600,000.
Quite a multiplication from 75 to over 600,000 in 430 years.

I think Hebrew is more of a religious term and Isrealite is more of a regional term.
