Licensing and Certification

Doctor of Medicine
Applicants must:
1) Have completed a doctor of medicine program at an AMA Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) approved medical school.
2) Have completed 3 years of accredited postgraduate training (unless applying by endorsement of license).
3a) Pass the United States Medical Licensing examination; or
b) Be board-certified by one of the specialty boards of the American Board of Medical Specialists and pass a state written licensing examination.
4) Pass other State Board required written and/or oral exams relating to the practice of medicine in your state.
5) Applicants applying by endorsement will be required to appear before the Board and may still be required to take an exam or meet other requirements.

An applicant may also be required to take the Special Purpose Examination (SPEX) if he or she has not taken a major written exam within the ten years prior to the date of application.

Foreign medical school graduates must submit proof of the degree of Doctor of Medicine or its equivalent. Foreign graduates must also hold the standard certificate given by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or have written proof of having passed the examination given by the Commission.

The State Board may grant a license in one of the following categories to an applicant who has received a license in another state or who is otherwise eligible for a permanent license. The categories of licensure include locum tenens, special, temporary and endorsement.

Fees
Fees may be subject to change. Fees are: application--$400; biennial registration--$600; resident physician application/licensing per year--$250/$50, respectively.

Preparation

To work as an anesthesiologist, you must:

complete a bachelor's degree;
graduate from medical school;
complete an internship;
complete a four-year residency program in anesthesiology;
pass additional exams to become board certified;
work well under pressure; and
be able to work as part of a team.

Formal Education
To become a licensed doctor, you must complete medical school. Medical schools grant a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.M.) degree. You spend the first two years of medical school in classrooms and laboratories. You study anatomy, biochemistry, and medicines. You also learn how to take a medical history, examine patients, and make a diagnosis. During the next two years, you work in hospitals and clinics under the supervision of experienced physicians.

Entry into medical school is competitive. You should apply to several schools.

Most students who apply to medical school have a bachelor's degree. A pre-medicine or science major is good preparation. If you earn a liberal arts degree, be sure to take several courses in physics, biology, and chemistry.

On-the-job Training
While in medical school, you spend two years working as an intern in a hospital or clinic. As an intern, you rotate through different medical specialties. These include internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics, oncology, and other hospital departments.

After medical school, you must complete a four-year residency program in anesthesia. You receive wages while you are a resident. After completing your residency, you take additional exams in anesthesiology to become board certified.

Military Training
The military is a good source of training for this occupation.

Good luck!!

1) 4 years of Pre-med
2) 4 years of Medical school
3) 1 year of internship
4) 3-4 years as a resident in anesthesiology
5) about another 6 months to prepare for Board certification

You are looking at about 13-14 grueling years of hard work after high school.
