You have to hit down on the ball, try shifting your weight to the front foot just before impact while taking a divot. Your divot should start right behind the ball. clubs 7- lob wedge are the clubs most likely to help you apply spin. The lower the loft of the club the harder it is to apply spin. Use a good ball also: such as titelist Pro V-1, Callaway Hx-tour 56, Nike one Platinum, In my opinion the pro V-1 is the best for spin. The best club for me that produces the most spin is my 58* titelist Vokey Spin MIlled Wedge, This club helps the ball to spin back due the design of the grooves on the face of the club look into buying one of the spin milled vokey wedges ($90.00 Ebay) or in your local golf shop($100.00) to help your ball to check up or spin back. Practice is the key to everything so pratice the shot at your local range, It took me about 3 monthes to learn how to get the ball to spin like i want BUt remember DON't change your swing still do what feels comfortable just hit down on the ball, Also the harder you swing the more backspin you'll create don't swing so hard that you spin the ball off the green because That will just PISS you off, Good Luck!!

The ball backs up on the green because the golfers put back-spin on the ball. They do this by making a divot AFTER they strike the ball (striking down), while most all amateur golfers take a divot BEFORE they strike the ball (trying to scoop the ball).
