Usually hair that is truly breaking and not falling out is caused from over process, ie: color, perm, hair dryer, irons, cheap hair products w/ high detergent content (not pH balanced etc.
For sure do not continue to stress your hair any further, until repaired.
One of my favorite hair repairs is to take Real Mayonnaise, not fat free (at least a cup, more if your hair is long) to this you add 2 egg YOLKS per cup of mayo. Mix in a bowl and microwave for 45 sec. Gently work this into your hair, use as much as your hair will hold. Place a shower cap or plastic groceries bag held together w/ butterfly clip. Now using the hair dryer continue applying heat for 20- 30 minutes. This will penetrate the hair shaft and moisturize to protect. Total cost less than $1
Or if you want to spend money, go to the beauty supply and get a hair re constructor with polymers, very expensive but saved my hair from total disaster when I let a beauty school student perm my hair into what felt alot like carpet!
Either way, after you reconstruct you should then use a good sealer. I love clear "JAZZING" @ beauty supply for $8 will seal your hair for up to 6 weeks with the most incredible shine you've ever seen. This process is often refered to as Cellophane Treatment. What ever you do, be gentle. Good luck :)

It is very important that you try and maintain a good balanced diet. Hair breaking can be caused by a number of things, including the lack of vitamin deficiency which causes the hair to get shorter with lots of split ends, also permanent colourants that has not been rinsed out properly, day after day blow drying is also a culprit, try handling your hair with care and ease when brushing use a reputable shampoo and leave in conditioner and most of all visit your hairdresser and have your hair assessed and trimmed every six weeks.

Well if you braid your hair when it is wet then stop because it breaks the hair. When it is braided an wet when it drys the braid gets tighter. If that's not the case the you could get Redkin Anti-snap. It is in a blue bottle and works great. You can get it at and beauty salon or at someplace like JCPenny's, Dillard's, Macy's, ect. It's about $15, but totally worth it!

Split ends get bigger if you dont chop them off, so make sure you have regular trims. As far as preventing them in the first place, there are shampoos available to strengthen hair. Also use a good brush like Denmans as this wont get caught in your hair, and tear the ends. Also try to avoid brushing your hair when its wet, as hair is weaker, and actually stretches, making it thinner and eventually snapping it.

hot oil treatment as directed for how often to use. use your fingers to comb through your hair after it is wet. then use a comb. sometimes i use a pick that is used for permed hair. the teeth are wide and it doesn't break the hair.
