You need to set bounderies for all babies, human or canine.
I agree that everything needs love but the point your friends mom is making is valid too. She want's a pet around the house that will know it's place in the family and dogs need structure.
The fine balance has to be found.
There is lot's of info here.

It sounds like me a person should call animal control and report her. That is abuse, makes me wonder why she got a puppy in the first place. Is it because she has a control problem and has no one else at home to take it out on?
And the answer is no just like is there such a thing as "babying" a human baby. Or a child that is home from school with the flu. Everyone could use a little more tenderness. I just read the previous answer and I second the motion!

i dont think she should get mad b/c the dog won't listen - it's a puppy! their attention spans are all over the place! i think that people should be allowed to hold the puppy, but not too much if it's a big breed b/c then it will want to be held when it's 50 lbs bigger!
this woman sounds like she's trying to establish dominance over the dog - which is a good thing (b/c if you're not the dominant one, then they will be!). but it's also important not to go too far. she should be spending time with her puppy - playing with him, but letting him know when he's getting too rough. taking him on walks. and especially taking him to obedience classes, so then she can be taught when she's being too controlling or not controlling enough.

yes you can baby a puppy, it will spoil him/her...
There are times you should cuddle with your pet, but keeping him locked up all day is not good either...
training is very important in raising a happy and healthy pet...you should be firm when training your dog, if you don't then your dog will be boss...he/she will think they are the leader of the pack...I suggest you get a book or two on how to train your puppy, it is easier now to train when they are small...always remember the saying, you can't teach an old dog new tricks...while you can, it is much harder to break pets out of bad habits once they are used to doing the habit...good luck

There is a fine line between over endulging a dog and not endulging it enough. This person sounds like she is way too cruel on her dog. You cannot hold a dog "too much". This practice of child rearing was overcome in the 1920s. Unfortunately, some people can still be morons. Good luck, and no, you aren't too soft.

Your best friends mother is really mean and I would totally call animal abuse because a puppy needs LOTS of love. You are doing a perfectly good job on your puppy.

I personally like my dogs to sleep in the bed with me. Some people don't though and that's their preference. I will say though...dogs aren't going to listen like humans. She has to train her dog in order for it to listen. Otherwise she's just saying a whole bunch of words to it that it doesn't understand.
A lot of people do get dogs for companionship, but there are other people out there that have them for totally other reasons that I haven't quite understood yet.
