Chicken bones are the worst things to give to your dog. They are hollow, and when they crack open they are like shards of glass. There are some bones like for pot roast that are relatively safe. If you have to give your dog bones, or table scraps for that matter, never give them chicken bones.

The answer is that they really dont digest the bones, all the way. It probably is just chewed up really well and comes out the other end, as with most creatures.

Honestly though, dogs bodies arent built to completely break down bones, so giving them bones they can chew up and swallow isnt a good decision. I watched my puppy (about one year) chew up a chicken bone and freaked out, to say the least. I wasnt aware she was doing it until it was too late, i didnt know it was a chicken bone.

As far as I know, they cant totally break down the bone all the way.

Any bone that has been cooked is a risk to your dog, the bone splinters which can cause all sorts of problems as mentioned in the other answers. If you are going to feed ya dog bones, give it uncooked fresh from the butchers. this wont harm your dog and will still contain bone marrow etc.
