Day is a very old word going back to proto indo-european language, which may date back to the very beginings of language. That means most words for day in european langauges sound reasonably similar to English. For instance the latin for day is dies, and in Sanskrit (an Indian language) it is dive. The English word day comes from the Old English daeg.

Night is also an old word, from the indo-european nekt, which also comes to English from Saxon/German nacht. There are more similarities between languages when night is concerned than when day is - i.e. more languages have similar sounding words for night.
