Someone has told me this as their hobby, however, I have no idea what it means.

Middle ages

To davidroberts: Middel is indeed obvious. Leeuwen means lions in Dutch, that's correct, but in the word Middeleeuwen there is only one L, so it's divided in 'middel' and 'eeuwen'. Eeuwen means centuries, i.e. ages.
