I just wonder if anyone else sees that because atheists generally feel that there is nothing after death that they appreciate what they have. It seems to me like religious people take this life for granted by thinking that there is something better afterward.

Here, Here, I think you have hit the nail on the head.
Christians are so worried that they have to follow every little bit of this or that or they will lose their place in line for the Palace.
I think they should try more to get along with people now and not let their religion start so many wars, even the tiny wars here in the Yahoo Answers section of Religion & Spirituality. When I read their questions and answers to the Atheists, I feel the anger and sometimes the hatred that they write.
My life is good and I am a good person, I don't cheat people, I don't hate people for anything they do unless it is directed to me or my family. You can live your life as a good person without religion, regardless of what they think.

I like your thinking here but I would have to disagree on the appreciation part. On the whole, anyway. I didn't. But that is really neither here nor there, because life is relative and about your perception of it. So you or I may enjoy life more than other atheists or pagans. To a greater or lesser degree. What is enjoyment to one, may not be to another, and appreciation is a perception. So I think it would really have nothing to do with the religiousity of a person, but the capacity they have to appreciate the world. I do like the idea to live this life as if there is nothing after it, but I cannot agree. But, I will keep on appreciating all the beauty around me, as well as the technology, because the way we are going, we won't have it on the next go round.
Blessed Be.

In theory we should, since we don't believe in repeat performances, but I think believers assume being an atheist means you cease delaying any and all gratification and devote yourself 7x24 to forbidden vices. Most atheists I know are just as boring, if a little more intellectually stimulating, than most believers. We all have to see to the business of making a living, etc, whatever we believe, so I don't think it changes things as much as people imagine.

This is a bit of a loaded question.
Christians know that there is life after death.
Everyone should live life to the fullest reguardless of these beliefs.
Christians may not take as many vacations because of religious duties but they do enjoy life.
Did you ever think that maybe Christians don't have to do other things/activies to have fulfillment in life?

that's a very good question and you have hit on a christian sore point. Christians suffer in fear all their lives even if in private while publicly claiming to be saved from punishment in the here after.
Most christians or even sunday morning christians are sure , so sure they are heaven bound they accasionally slip back for an small sin such as adultry, office thief ect.

Of course an Atheist has nothing to fear other then the usual things life throws at them. A Christian fears hell making him behave irrationally and uptight as you can see in this forum.

Agreed. Religious types tend to focus more on that which they believe comes after. So they are wasting their lives here to prepare for something that may not happen. So stop wasting my precious air and live you freaking life.

I am a Christian. I believe that God created this earth for us to enjoy and care for. I appreciate every flower, every tree, every cloud in the sky, every raindrop, and every ray of sunshine. I thank the Lord each day for what He has given me. I am an environmentalist who taught inner city children to care for God's earth. Does that sound like I'm taking anything for granted?

it does often seem that way, doesn't it? i don't think it's like that, though. i think everyone wants to make the most out of this life; even if i do see proof otherwise every single day, i must believe it. life is so short - we must honor it! that's why i get so frustrated so often.

that said, we probably do. it sucks.
