When ever he/she is able to handle a cup or glass without spilling the liquid all over the place. The toddler will usually tell you when they are ready for a grown up glass. What is wrong with the sippy cup anyway? I like not having to clean up spills all the time. Another container you may want to try is the pull top water bottle. Kids love them. Probably not 2 year olds though. My kids kept the sippys until they were somewhere around 4. It's not hurting any one, so why stress? It's not like a pacifier that can mess up the palate and teeth! My son is 28 months and he and all his friends his age use sippy cups. It is totally fine as long as your child is comfortable. You can start offering a regular cup at meal times, so your toddler gets used to it. A sippy cup is definitely the way to go if you are out and about, because it prevents spills.

I would say at LEAST by 2 1/2 yrs. My daughter is 18 months and i just took away her sippy cup at night. Your son can always drink out of juice boxes or those travel cups where the straw flips up to suck from when you wanna take the sippy cup away.

When they are ready to.
My daughter was off breast and bottle around 9 to 11 months old.
She went straight to a regular cup or glass. At 4 1/2 months I had her learn to swallow from a special cup that only let a drop at a time out and had a regular cup edge. She passed the sippy cup and probably wouldn't know how to drink from one.
This really came in handy because she didn't need any special equipment along.
My son on the other hand, was more oral. He used to put every fluff or fuzz in his mouth. He wanted a bottle to go to sleep. I would dilute his milk to murky water. I knew I went too far diluting it, if he took a sip and then flung the bottle across the room.
Around 2 years of age, when he knew it was the last bottle nipple we had, He bit it and it was gone. I guess it was his way to be done with it. He understood and that was it.
So maybe it would be good to deplete your sippy cup collection (if you have one). He can learn how to drink from a regular cup sometimes. If you go to a straw. It is an additional thing to learn and he may swallow air.
Give him something he really likes like Welches Grape or apple juice to learn with. and only an ounce to start.
He will have fun learning and he can continue with the sippys until the last one is lost.
God Bless You, ;-)

I think while you are at home you should get your kid used to using a " big boy's" cup not a sippy, but while you are in the car, at the park, etc. you should use a sippy cup until the age of about 3 1/2.
(that's what i did with my kid.)

It doesn't really matter but you do need to practice regular cup usage. I kind of have a problem with people who let their kids wander around with beverages unless it's water. Who needs that much juice or milk that they can't wait for mealtime? My daughter is 4 and hasn't used one since she was 18 months old. Not because I'm uppity about it but because I'm freaking lazy and kept losing the tops of the sippy cups and started just giving her the cups without the tops. She drank from a regular cup at the table, or a straw in the car. Now she drinks from screw-top bottles of water or juice when she needs something that is spillproof (takes a sip, puts the cap back on) like on car rides or whatever. You have to be willing to let the kid have accidents sometimes and then they'll learn to be more careful.

There is no age or rules on when to stop using a sippy cup. Let him use it as long as he is comfortable. Give him a regular cup throughout the day for practice. If you see too many spills or accidents, then he may not be ready for one. If you think sippy cups are too babyish then get him one with a straw. Try not to rush it.
