All in all, would it be cheaper to make potato chips rather than buy them? I usually don't eat them, nor does my daughter, so I am thinking it would be cheaper just to make a few every now and then, does this seem reasonable to anyone else?

When I was in college, a bunch of my friends would get together in residence and make potato chips. Now we were all in Hospitality and Culinary courses so we were creative like this, but they tasted so much better than anything we could buy in the grocery store. It's easiest to do this with a deep fryer but if you have a large stock pot, put some vegetable oil in the bottom and fry them up. Best thing to season them with is some coarse salt and balsamic vinegar.

Chips are like 99 cents...way cheaper to buy than make your own and buy potatoes, oil, AND have to clean up the mess. I usually buy the baked versions or soy chips, both of which costs more than the standard kinds, but I think it's worth it.

It might be better to buy a bag, after opening the first time put the remaining chips in a good zip-loc bag (inserting a clean & dry paper towel with them to collect any moisture) then put the sealed bag of chips into the freezer. That will keep them fresh for all future use.

You can make an even healthier version at home, even without potatoes! You can buy plantains in almost any store now, which is a type of banana, but they make great chips.

Making them myself.
Just don't expect to get them as crispy and equal golden coloured as the bought ones.

Nevertheless is doesn't hurt trying, I think they have more taste.

Here's my recipe:
