It might be helpful to set it to music if you can try to fit it to any melodies that you know. That has helped me in the past.

yes start with a, ae is next because e is after a in the alphabet (considering only vowels), they you have ae again, because it was the second item in the list. then you have am because m is the 13th letter of the alphabet and 1+3 = 4, the 4th thingy. Finally you have long a. because this is an awefully long way to go about memorizing the first declension, feminine singular endings.
You get the idea.

When learning languages I would copy the details from the text book to a note book. By writing down as well as reciting the words, this helped me memorise

It depends on how you learn. I recorded them in order and listened to it on tape while looking at the flash cards. I seem to require both the audio and visual aides. It might sound silly, but setting it to music might help, too. As a musician, I find that stuff often helps, like with the planets (my very educated mother just served us nine pizzapies = mercury venus earth mars jupiter saturn uranus neptune pluto).

when you want to retain the words you have to prepare yourself mentaly by eating some almond, nuts and peanuts which are very energetic for brain. then while you are memorzing the words try to read and write them. The occurence of these three actions at the same times will help your mind to keep them easily.
all the best

Repetition usually works for me, as well as word association.
If you associate a word with a thing (it can be anything, just make sure it reminds you of the word or thing you want to memorize.), it's much easier to remember it.
