I've heard something about dropping it in a glass of water, but how do you know if it is fresh or rotten?

A glass, bowl, or pot of water will do. A fresh egg will just sit there. If the egg tips up noticeably, it's no longer really fresh but still OK to use in recipes where the egg's flavor isn't front-and-center. If it floats, it doesn't necessarily qualify as "rotten", but you wouldn't want to use it. Hope that helps.

At times you can see a mold on the shell and a foul aroma/smell if you crack it you will see blood throw away.
