It used to be a nice thing to say, I think it's been around too long and now means nothing.

No, unless its incredibly insincere. Even if some detective came up with a court order or whatever, and said "you've been served. Have a nice day!", I'd consider it more of a conversation terminal than it having literal meaning. Now, if they said... "I just pissed on all of your clothes and smeared dog poop on all your door handles... have a nice day!" I'd do something, though I'm not sure I'd barf.

no it doesn't and when i tell people to have a nice day i seriously want them to because one angry person is bound to upset most of the people they interact with that day and i may have to deal with one of those people later. So go stand by the toilet if you need to but "have a nice day."

It's just small talk and a pleasant phrase, nothing to take overly literal and I'd sure rather hear that than someone telling me to have a bad day.

No. I thank them and reply with "you do the same!"
Even if it's the cashier at Wal-Mart who doesn't know me from Adam, what's the harm in returning well-wishes? What does it cost me, two seconds of my time to smile and say something nice?

No, when i'm in a bad mood it puts me in a good mood, and when I'm in a good mood it help keeps me there. Whenever some one says "Have a nice day." to me I always respond with "Thank you, You too." If everybody responded likewise, this world might be a better place to live.

Yes. They should just say have a bad day, this is much easier to do. Have a nice day, take care, take it easy, are all just ways to end a conversation or to say in passing. People say stupid things all the time. Like you order food and get it and waitress says enjoy your food and you say "you to", or cab drops you off at airport and he says have a good flight and you say "you to", sometime stupid sh*t just comes out of our mouths but those people that say nice day can go to hell.

No, but I hate it when people say "How are you?" when they're not even looking at you and they dont really mean it. Might as well say "hi" to keep it short
