I started with Zoloft, worked great, yet didn't enjoy the "sexual" side effects (which can make anyone more depressed, LOL!). Then I went on Effexor, another SSRI, same dreaded side effect, then my doc put me on Lexapro, however, it make me sweat like I was in Las Vegas in August (and it was winter here!). Now, I'm on Wellbutrin which doesn't have the sexual side effect issue, but it isn't an SSRI which is what I really think I need to compliment the Wellbutrin to have the best result. My doctor even tells me this, but I resist, because let's face it, I'd like to be able to enjoy sex! LOL!

Argh.....wonder if it is possible to invent an SSRI without the dreaded side effect.

Effexor is not an SSRI by the way. Anyhow it's always tricky to get the right medication or combination to suit each individual. The other problem is the time factot to see if it will work. Six weeks is the average to get full effects. However in your case I would suggest taking your doctor's advice. A Low dose SSRI might just be the right combination with Welbutrin. Depression is awful and i would prefer to have some small inconveniences than feel depressed (Suffered from chronic depression for 20 years)

I was prescribed Paxil for both anxiety and depression. It didn't help me much, but when I decided to go off it two years later, I suffered very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms which lasted a few months.

I was also prescribed Wellbutrin, just for depression. It seemed to help a little, but after the Paxil experience I decided I didn't want to stay addicted to any other antidepressant. During the quitting process, I suffered a very different withdrawal symptom - emotional and physical violence.

Conclusion? Both drugs are very dangerous. They might help some people, but it could get ugly once you try to wean yourself from them.

From my personal experience and subsequent reading, all antidepressants can be dangerous. While some people may not have serious side effects while taking it, many people experience disturbing withdrawal symptoms (some physical, some emotional) once they start the quitting process.

I believe that we should try our best avoiding antidepressants unless there is absolutely no other choice (you or someone's life is in danger, or other types of therapy haven't worked well enough).

I am on Effexor (150 mg) I hate the sexual side effect as well. As to if it is helping me... it used to. Now I am starting to feel worse and am actually thinking about death quite a bit. Only thing that keeps me from it at the moment are my 2 children...

I was on Wellbutrin after Zoloft. Wellbutrin was awesome. It didn't affect me sexually and it gave me so much energy throughout the day. I loved it. HOWEVER, it totally messed with my vision. (It has this effect on maybe 1% of people)

If you are able, ask your Dr to prescribe it. I think you'll find it to do what you are looking for.

I am on Prozac and yes it's helped me tremendously. The side effects are relatively the same for me, too. But it's just something I've over come. (no pun intended)

And, I hope that an SSR will be devoid of those types of side effects!! That would be a wonderful day! :-)

Yes, these disorders have been around as long as mankind. It is possible that depressives have always 'self medicated' with alcohol.
I have, myself, been taking Prozac for about 15 years without any side effects.
Keep talking to your MD about your side effects.
