We are moving there soon..we just keep hearing about the cold winters (it's cold here) and the HOT summers, and lack of population. Is there enough to keep you busy?

I've been living here for a year now, after living in Florida for 35 years. Moved back to the town I was born in but I'd never *lived* here, just visited summers for two or three months while I was growing up.

For us, this was the best decision we've ever made. Yes, it's cold. You learn to live with it and make adjustments accordingly. Summers hot? Pffft. Sure, this year we hit 100+ for several days over a couple of weeks, but then it drops into the low 60's or 50's at night... and then it's over. Unlike Florida, which started with hot sometimes as early as April and remained so as late as Halloween. Florida, 95-75, 95-75, for weeks and months on end, with high humidity. Here, 85 or 90 to 60, gradually warming up in June and dropping back down to 75-80 during the day and 55 at night here in August! Talk about heaven for me...

I like the rural nature of the state, but I always have. And while it would be nice to have a little more choice in things to do, and have it closer (we're not in one of the cities), I'm past the point in my life where that's the be-all end-all of my existence. I've got broadband internet, digital cable, friends when I want them, community events, people know me... the spring, summer and fall is beautiful here, if you like the outdoors and/or hunting/sports, there's more here than you can imagine.

Drawbacks to consider: travel in and out of the state is either pricey or limited or both. Airfare runs higher, and buses and trains only run one route each through the state (bus along I-94, train further north and across). Shopping is somewhat limited unless you are in Fargo or Bismarck. Driving in winter can be dangerous, but you prepare and take precautions like in any other northern state. Jobs are available but the choice is limited in rural areas and the pay isn't as high as many other states. Government services are somewhat limited as well, but you get fairly personalized attention compared to larger states. Heating bills can be high. Medical services are spread out, and most specialists are in the larger cities, meaning you have to drive to get to some doctors a lot. Some areas can feel a bit cliquish -- that's small town America. Your reputation is very important. But.. you can buy a decent house for 20K in smaller communities. I don't lock my doors, even at night, and people leave their cars running all the time at the grocery store or fast food place... no one bothers them. Try that anywhere else.

As someone else said, living here is what you make it. You can be unhappy or content wherever you are. Me? I can't imagine living anywhere else.

I actually in Minot, North Dakota. Minot AFB. It gets cold as H*ll up here and i'm from texas so it is crazy to come here from a warm state and have the weather change. There is not a lack of population but there is a lack of entertainment. In minot all there is to do is the mall the movie theatre and the bowling alley. Oh yeah and bingo if you like it. That's literally it!! And if you are underage you can go to canada to drink but dont get caught coming back drunk. Canada is where everyone goes. I think thats why canadians dont like us lol we get into alot of trouble and cause trouble over there.

Every place you move is what you make of it and well North Dakota isnt the best but i've seen worse. If you are military and coming to minot then shoot me an e-mail i can tell you alot

Depends where you are moving from. Are you already used to the 'slow' type life? I moved from capital of Pa. to rural Nebraska. It's QUITE a change, and that was 12 years ago!!! Still bores me a little out here! Just move to a small town and get involved.
