The original City was only on Mahattan. When the Brooklyn bridge was built it connected the City of Brooklyn to Manhattan.
Manhattan came from the Indian name. The Bronx come from the Bronc family living there. The Bouroughs are also Counties. Brooklyn is offically Kings County, theres Quees, and Saten Island, which is Couny of Richmond. The Bronx is the only part that is on the mainland. Brooklyn and Queens are part of Long Island. And Staten Island in way out in the Bay.

Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Queens.

They are the different counties that make up New York City. Manhattan is called New York county, Brooklyn is Kings county, Queens is Queens county, Staten Island is Richmond county, and the Bronx is Bronx county.

Brooklyn and Queens are neighbors on Long Island, they are the two counties closest to Manhattan, and the Nassau county line starts Long Island and separates it from New York City. The Bronx is on the mainland of New York State and is separated by the Yonkers county line. State Island and Manhattan are their own islands.
