The entire book of Exodus in the Old Testament is the story of Moses and what he did for his people. After the Jews moved to Egypt during a drought because Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob, was second in command only to the Pharaoh. While they were there their numbers increased so dramatically the the Pharaoh feared that they would take over the country so he made them slaves. Moses was born a Jew but was raised by the Pharaoh's daughter (read Exodus to find out why). After he grew up he discovered his heritage as a Jew. He saw an Egyptian overseer beating a Jewish slave and he killed him. Fearing punishment he ran off. While he was in a far land he married and became a shephard. He stayed there many years until God finally came to him and told him to go back to Egypt because he was going to be the person that God was going to use to free the Jews from bondage.
He went back and, after seven miraculous plagues were brought on Egypt the Pharaoh finally let the Jews leave Egypt with all their possessions. After a short while the Pharaoh was sorry that he let all those slave free so he decided to follow them, kill Moses, and force the Jews back into slavery.
He caught up with Moses at the shores of a sea. There God told Moses to raise his arms and when he did God parted the sea and the Israelites passed over the bottom of the sea on dry ground.
When Pharaoh and his men tried to follow the sea went back as it was and all the men drowned.
This is a really, really condensed version of what happened to Moses and the Jews. To find the real story, read Exodus.

He was this Jew, who was able to concoct this whole fantasy about talking to god and receiving rules and guidance, in order to gain control of these other wandering Jews. Then, according to religious legend, he got lost for 40 years, and started smoking lots of pot, which probably contributed to his being lost.

Seriously, I implore you to examine all religion as suspect. Don't treat "faith" as a substitute for "fact"! Word Up!

He was a Jew who God used to lead his people out of isreal. Moses was also a murder, so that goes to show that even a repented murder can become a man of God.
