I like to match the cat's name to its appearance or actions or how I found it. Here are some examples;
Snowball - white cat
Gypsy - she was a wandering stray that I took in
Krazy Kat - a black and white cat that looked like the old comic strip cat
Tigger - looks like the tiger in Winnie the Pooh
Ashley - solid gray cat

My cat was already named Sammi when I got him. Suits him, but I usually try to name a cat by his fur, like Shaggy, Dusty, Furball,something unusual.

Girl cat or boy cat?
I've had cats named Noelle (got her around Christmas), Abby and my current cat, Cassie.
As a kid, I had cats named Misty and Buttercup. Never had a male cat, but my daughter does and his name is Oscar. My son has a male also and his name is Cordaroy.

I tend to name pets according to their personalities and/or their story.
I once had a ferret who we named Pounce because he had a tendancy to pounce on everything. I currently have a cat named Stormy. He is black and I saved him from a storm drain.
One tip...I've heard you should use a name with an "e" sound at the end. The "e" sound is a naturally higher pitched sound that animals cue in on. Makes it easier to call them to you.

I think you have to live with a cat for a while before it's name is revealed to you. Mine have been named Persistence (he decided to adopt us), Risky (adopted on her last day at the pound), Smudge (a tomboy kitten with a distinctive mark on her chin), and Luna, a very sweet and kind of spacy black and white.
