In the 1970's the main current events were about Vietnam and the race riots here in the USA. The current events daily had to do with the death toll in Vietnam, the peace negotiations in Paris, the riots in Watts and the south, Martin Luther King Junior, Bobby Kennedy, etc. The fashions were mini-skirts, long hair, bell-bottoms, and hippie-clothes... The presidents were Johnson and Nixon Ford. I was in college then... the way it was different was that everyone was talking about the "Kent State Riots" and "Love-ins" and "Sit-ins" and being anti-establishment. We all felt we couldn't trust anyone over 30. We all wanted to do something important with our lives, and not just wear a tie and work for the same company forever and live in suburbia. Pot was new and exciting, and some people experimented with LSD, etc. Abortion had just be legalized so "free love" was "groovy" and there were very few STD's to be afraid of. Most guys wanted to go to college to avoid getting drafted to Viet-nam, because if you went to "Nam" you likely would not come back. Gas was less than 50 cents per gallon, and cars were big and fast. The beginnings of migrant worker unions were forming so there were people who would discourage you from buying lettuce or grapes or whatever they could to help the migrant worker's causes.
