Sometimes that dirt is caused by ear mites. They do have medicine for ear mites, but maybe you should have the vet look at your cat's ears for you.

If it looks really dirty inside, it's more than likely earmites, especially if kitty scratches furiously at his ears (they usually also complain/meow while scratching). If it looks REALLY dirty, they're probably pretty well developed in their colony, and you want to take your kitty to the vet to get some prescription strength earmite medicine. If all you see are a few dirty brown spots toward the inside base of the ear, get some mineral oil and some OTC earmite medicine (pet aisle of grocery store)--mix them together and administer a drop or two with an eyedropper. Do this twice a day, morning and evening, for two weeks. It takes two weeks to disrupt the network and suffocate the mites so that they can't rebuild. You MUST do this faithfully twice a day for two weeks...even one missed administration can allow them to rebuild.
If you have other kitties, you better check their ears too--earmites are VERY contagious and not good--I've had a kitty lose an ear because he scratched so hard at the mites that he broke skin, which got infected and swelled up as an abscess.
Good luck.
if kitty's ears really are just dirty, washing with a gentle no tears shampoo should do the trick--just make sure you do it with full body armor---kitties do NOT like bathing/water, and will use every weapon in their arsenal to get out of it.

Could be your cat has ear mites. If they have blackish brown crusty stuff coming out of them. They can only get ear mites from another animal, so if your cat is not around other animals it isn't ear mites. You can use a Q-tip to clean your cats ears. The ear canal goes in and makes a 90 degree turn so you can't get to the ear drum. There are ear cleaners you can buy for cats but if it is just a little grime you can clean it without the cleaner. Good luck.

I agree with 100% of posters. It is most likely ear mites. A vet can clear them up with a simple shot.
When I grew up (back in the dark ages) there was a common expression "Don't put anything in your ear larger than your elbow!"
I think q-tips are dangerous as they will probably only accomplish pushing the earmites down further into the ear canal and really won't do much good.
So the vet would be my choice in this situation.

well it may not be dirt...if it keeps coming back soon after you clean them then it is ear mites not dirt...you have to go to the vet to get special drops or a shot for this...you can buy over the counter ear mite drops however they are not as effective and too much can really hurt your cat (cause seizures) if you dont give them the proper dosage...best bet go to the vet and let him treat it good luck

Sounds like earmites. You can get something at the pet store that is a 2 step process. Something to clean them with and something to treat the mites. Or if you don't have the money you can swab them with mineral oil and then treat them with hydrogen pyroxide but be careful as hydrogen pyroxide will bleach the cat (that's OK) and also anything you are wearing etc. when the cat shakes her head.

You cat most likely has ear mites, they have medicine for it or you could clean them out and put baby oil in the ear to smother them but you must repeat it every few days.

You should really take her to the vet to be sure you are using the right medication. She could have a bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection, yeast infection, or it could be ear mites.
They sell OTC products at pet stores but you could do more damage if your not using the right medication.

if they have dark brownish stuff in their ears it is most likely earmites and should be treated before it gets worse. the vet has the best stuff but walmart carries a cheap brand that may work as well.
