sorry you had to go through so many nut cases to get to me, although several did logical coherent answers,
1. there are 2 types of This is what Paul was referring to in Corinthians, and the congregations miss use of it.
the first is tongues as a prayer language and comes with the infilling of the Holy Spirit, and it is so you can talk to god from your Spirit.
the second is the gift of tongues, and is only to be uses in the congregation if there is an interpretation.
My Wife has the gift of interpretation where she hears it in English and understands.
there are several instances where missionaries, spoke in tongues in foreign countries and were understood by the congregation that spoke no English.

If you see or hear of someone speaking in tongues, it's more than likely fake.
In the book of Acts, the gift of speaking in languages previously unlearned was given to many on the day of Pentecost. All the Jews who had made their required visit to Jerusalem heard the disciples speaking about Jesus in their own native tongue or language. This was a sign given by God to validate what the disciples were teaching. Tongues or languages were spoken of in 1 st Corinthians. Paul rebuked the improper use of tongues.
There has been no record of Christians speaking in tongues since the 1st century up until the Pentecostal revival around 1900. Since then many different Charismatic churches have surfaces deceiving ignorant people about tongues. Trust me-it's phony.

And God bless you, too. Tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit. I've heard people speaking in tongues several times. It is actually a language from Heaven, and unless there is someone who can interpret (Interpretation of Tongues is another gift of the Holy Spirit.), you can't know what is being said. It's wonderful to hear, though.

Today, Christians seem to think that 'Speaking in Tongues' means rolling around on the floor, and babbling incoherently. It is a kind of induced hysteria.
In the bible, someone who had the 'gift of tongues' could be speaking to a crowd in Greek, for example, and people who did NOT speak Greek would hear and understand the speaker in their own language... just like the 'babblefish' in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Of course, just like the 'babblefish', this is pure horseshit.

I received the gift afew months back but have only used it 4 or 5 times. I did it in private while praying and worshiping.
My understanding is that it is a way for the Holy Spirt to help you speak to God through your heart and not your mind.
Sometimes there is a block getting out what you really need to say or repent for and what you are thinking.
I hope this helps???
God Bless you.

Before the Babel Tower and separation of humankind there was only one language. This original language you come to 'know' and also you can talk in all the Earth's languages.
The Ancient Greek philosophers it is said to have found a 'mark' of some sort that gave you this ability staring and concentrating at it.
The Religious say God grants this gift to the righteous so they can carry out the word of God.

Dont worry about the present of tongues..you'd be to blame for the presents that were given to you and how you employ them. through how, talking in tongues isn't an ecstatic, electric powered, out of body journey. That description sounds extra like an occultic journey... relax and relax in Christ...

The gift of tongues is being able to speak so that many people can understand you, even when it is not their language.. or being able to speak in someone else's language when it is not YOUR language...
I believe there is one more form of this.. and it is where you can understand what someone says even when it is not your language and nobody else can understand it...
I have had this last type of experience when my brother was talking about something in the Bible and people made a big commotion about it... I did not find out until much later that I was the only one present that could understand what he was saying.

It is one of the gifts of the holy spirit among several others.
Gifts of the Spirit are special abilities provided by the Holy Spirit to Christians for the purpose of building up the body of Christ. The list of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 includes wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues.
One of the biggest benefits I have had of being able to speak in tongues is that it helps edify myself during worship (as in worship in the spirit), irrespective of whether I am alone or around others, worshiping quietly as in a whisper or loudly as in a shout.
1 Corinthians 14 v2 says, "For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit."

i know that in pentecostal church this "speaking in tongues" is very common. I know closely many people who do that, and this is how it looks like to me: they get themselves into a hypnotic state by praying, crying and screaming, then they start to "speak in tongues", which is actually just ecstatic utterances.
I do not believe that this a gift of God - speaking in tongues is practised by pagans a lot.
I noticed that "tongues" sounds similar in every church, people just listen to one another and spontaneously imitate...
And as for people who speak in tongues, i noticed their peculiarity: they sometimes hear something you didn't tell them and spend too much time in their thoughts.
