An arraignment is when a defendant appears before a judge and the charges are formally read into the court record. A bond is also set at this time by the judge.

One answer above was the most correct. The purpose of arraignment is to inform the accused of the charges against him. If he didn't know or wasn't sure what the charges were before then, he does now.
