I am 14 years old and I'm curious if I am suffering from insomnia. I can feel restless after having eight hours of sleep. Sometimes, I can even feel more active when I get four hours of sleep. When I try to fall asleep, my mind starts racing and before I know it, a few hours have passed. I tried limiting my sleep, so I'd feel tired the next night, but it doesn't work. I'll feel sleepy during the day, but active at night.

Thank you for all your insight. After reading your answers, I think it may be a result of stress. I'm usually a very calm person, but that's only because I let my stress build up so it won't intervene with what I need to do everyday.

OCgirl,
-I don't drink coffee.
-I'm always stressed, but it's something I've gotten used to.
-It's been happening for as long as I can remember, but I've never noticed until recently.
-My mood varies, so I wouldn't say I'm sad at all times.. I cry when I feel I have emotions built up. It helps me release them. When I stay up, I'll either very anxious or sedated. I may feel calm, but my mind will still be awake.

Actually studies are showing that pretty much every teen has a touch of insomnia, it's just the way their bodies work. If you're really concerned talk to a doctor.

Dear, fourteen year old, I have several questions for you.
Do you drink coffee and if you do how much. It's not uncommon to have sleep disorders due to drinking star bucks. My second question is their something going on in your life that could be causing stress. Stress could be a reason for your sleeping problem? If no than it much be another reason for it. Can you tell me how long this has been happening to get a better understanding. I have a good idea what it might be. Can you tell me a little about you mood, are you sad, and if so for how long. Do you cry for no reason. When you stay up at night how do you feel? It could be several things and I would not want to alarm you but if it persist than, I would see a school social worker or doctor to get a diagnoses.

My son is the same way and it is usually because his mind is racing and he is anxious. He has ADHD-Inattentive Type and this is a side affect. Sometimes reading will help him slow down and be able to sleep. If he goes more than 2 days without being able to sleep soundly we give him a Benadryl to reset his sleeping patterns. He has prescription sleeping pills but they are way too much for a school night. Try taking a Benadryl or going to bed half an hour earlier and reading. It may help.

I'm not sure if you have insomnia but perhaps you need to relax more and wind down when the evening comes. Try reading or breathing exercises. Sometimes if you're stressed or worried about something it's hard to get to sleep. Don't limit your sleep because that could affect your health.

Sometimes it really depends on what you eat and do before bedtime. If you eat sugary stuff, you won't be able to go to bed. I don't have an example for teh do before bed part but closing your eyes and thinking of calm stuff... it'll most likely work. Maybe you should be more active in the day so you're tired at night?

Yes you could be suffering from insomnia, especially if you have a lot of stress on you. Food with lots of sugar before you sleep can also cause this.

Well, my young friend, you very well may have insomnia. But don't worry. It is often only a temporary affliction for the people in your age group. If it persists, see a doctor. Otherwise, try warm baths, deep meditation, and soft music. You are not going to fall asleep to soda, hip hop, and candy.

nope. you need to find some activity that you enjoy and put your energy. You are too young to sit around doing nothing for long periods of time.

It's common for your sleeping patterns to change as you get older -- especially during the teenage years. I don't think it's anything to worry about right now -- you're just adjusting to adult sleeping patterns.
