Chickens are generally allowed in residential areas unless there is a specific law prohibiting them.

You are well within your rights, however, to file a complaint with Animal Control if the birds are too noisy or if they're living situation is unhealthy.

Often, Animal Control will ask that you provide them with a list of neighbors' signatures (like a petition) agreeing that the birds are causing a disturbance. Animal Control will then go out to look at the situation and ask the owners to either find some way to quiet their birds or remove them from the premises.

Do not try to take action again the birds yourself as the birds' owners can then turn around and sue you.

Look in the front part of your phone book under the City or County listings to find the number of your local Animal Control office.

Each municipality has its own zoning laws. Call your city hall or town office and find out whether they are permitted in your neighborhood.

How can chiickens cause a disturbance anyway? All they do is cluck, unless there's a rooster, and then the sound of his wake-up call is lovely and pastoral. I suggest you learn to live with it. It sounds relaxing! Maybe you could buy nice fresh eggs from your neighbor?

The legal description of the property (public record) may not allow this, Plus their may be restrictions on this in your subdivision. Contact your local county's administrative office and they may help. Many people break these restrictions but it will not be enforced if it is not reported.
